I have used Lincoln grease guns for years with good luck. The current model is:

I have been getting them from Ohio Power tools for about $37-40. There are cheaper models but these last real well.
For your air problem. Are you storing your grease tubes standing with the plastic cap up and the tear out ring down??? If you are not and let them set the other way or lay them on the side then the grease tube has air bubbles in it from incorrect storage. The tubes are not completely full on the side they will settle and have an air pocket clear down the side. On the wrong end they will have a 1/2-3/4 inch air pocket right against the pump head when you install them.
