The CPS is typically a run/no-run situation. For one that sounds like its falling apart I would look towards the under valve cover wiring harnesses or air in fuel.
Check the wire connections on each side of the valve cover gaskets in the valley. Two on each side. They are prone to come loose or have burned wires. Failures can also happen under the valve covers at the injector connectors. You can sometimes isolate which side the problem is on by feeling the exhaust manifold or checking with temp gun or water bottle. Repair kits are available for the harnesses if you find problems.
