Ran my 1999 F-350 (186,000 MILES) DULLY OVER 1,100 MILES YESTERDAY, shut it down at 3:15 am, was running fine!! Started it up at 8:00, didn't want to start, when it did it is making one heck of a racket, sounds like something knocking inside the engine????????? Water is ok, oil is ok, no blow back. How could it tear up sitting in the yard??? Reckon what has happened to it??? Thanks for any response.

Cam position sensor is probably the culprit. You can replace it yourself real easy with a 10mm wrench. It's role is to fire the injectors at the precise crank angle. It's the same thing as having water in your distributor cap on a gas engine.

Good luck! 7.3 engines are one of the toughest made.

Thanks for the info, I don't know anything about diesel engines, back in my hot rod days (early sixties) we used to work on those old 55,56,57, fords and chevys, then went to work in a chemical plant for 35 years, I know chemicals, not engines. I have a friend that has a friend that works in a diesel shop, said get it to him and he would fix it, THANKS

There was a recall on CPS, go to your Ford dealer, take your VIN# with you. If yours is original they will hand you one no charge.

You change it from underneath, located below the water pump.

The CPS is typically a run/no-run situation. For one that sounds like its falling apart I would look towards the under valve cover wiring harnesses or air in fuel.
Check the wire connections on each side of the valve cover gaskets in the valley. Two on each side. They are prone to come loose or have burned wires. Failures can also happen under the valve covers at the injector connectors. You can sometimes isolate which side the problem is on by feeling the exhaust manifold or checking with temp gun or water bottle. Repair kits are available for the harnesses if you find problems.

Ive never heard of a CPS that just semi works, they either do or dont! It almost sounds like a loose wire(s) going to the valve cover gasket. Engine was warm ,wires made good enough contact, engine cold they dont. Also pop the lid on the fuel bowl and see if theres fuel in there. Did the temps, by chance, drop last night?
