A couple things you can do as preventive measures against the next time:
1. Get a second hard drive. You can find Western Digital 1.5T drives for about $150. Create a "Documents" folder(or some such) on this drive. Right-click on your "My Documents" icon in Windows, select "Properties". There will be an option to move the folder; put it in the newly created "Documents" folder on the external drive. You still access it the same way, but since all your info is on the external drive, you won't be scrambling to salvage it the next time your OS is wiped out.
2. As soon as you make all your tweaks and get everything you want back on the pc, run Malwarebytes and a full virus scan. Once the machine is 100% clean and organized, do a full backup and save it on the USB drive also. Would be wise to backup your bookmarks occasionally also.
I use AVG Free Edition and have had only two problems in the last several years. I also use CCleaner from Piriform to clean up all the cookies, history, etc.
