A 56 is a good basic machine. I put many thousands of acres on a 58 six row and there's not a whole lot of difference between the two. Look at the bevel gears on the front end of the hex shafts going to the boxes and also the bevel gears they mate with on the drill shaft. They can be fairly cupped and still work but the driven shaft won't run as smooth and the seed plates will jerk slightly instead of run smoothly. Put a wrench on the long shaft and turn it back and forth and you'll find out how much wear you have to deal with. The hex shaft wears inside the bevel gears so that will give you a little slop too.
Leave the Gandy boxes where they're sitting, unless the seller wants them to go with the planter. If you do take them, throw them off at the first scrap yard you pass on the way home. Best thing I ever did was get rid of the Gandy boxes and put spray banding nozzles in place of them when I was still banding. I don't know anything about the fertilizer boxes. I never did use starter. Oh yes, if you do buy it, I have over a hundred plastic plates hanging in the barn. You are welcome to them if you're anywhere close to NW Iowa. Jim

Dad got her out there, explained how the clutch was the same as in our o
