I'd rule out the fuel problem totally. I'd be willing to bet that you have pulled the choke while its puking out. I would get a tune up kit with a set of Autolite 3116 plugs. The 386's never seemed to work as well as 3116 for these older machines. Points, condenser and rotor. Toss a timing light on it to insure timing. Backfire is a potential timing issue, popping is running lean. The initial adjustments are to get running. You still need to dial in those settings once the engine gets to operating temps.
