Those cracks in the moldboards occur simply because the moldboard has seen enough dirt passing over it that it is just flat worn out. If you could compare a brand new moldboard to the one that has cracks in it, I think you would find the new one is nearly twice the thickness.
I've seen moldboards worn so thin they actually had holes in them.
