Had a field once that did the same thing. The hard pan was damn hard. Moved to a different part of the field and it went deeper. Back to the first spot and after a few hundered feet you could not touch the tips, and they were wore big time on the bottom. Dug down with a hand post hole digger....yep it was hard, never was able to get under it in that one area. It was on dry land wheat ground.
