Back when I was in the chainsaw business in the 70's they promoted them. You need a powerful saw. A lot of patience. Chains sharpened for ripping, etc. I suppose it wouldn't take a lot of engineering to make a guide which would follow the straight 2x4 you nail to the log. At least that's the way I recall them working. I would sooner get even the most basic band saw for ripping.
