chainsaw lumber mill

Have any of you used one of those templets that lets you saw boards from a log using a chainsaw? Has anyone built their own templet?

No, but I have tried to use a chainsaw against the grain and it does not work real well. I suppose those chainsaw mills would be better than nothing in remote areas but for making lumber I'd want a real mill. I have had both circular and band mills over the years. You don't have to have a heavy expensive mill to make good lumber.

Back when I was in the chainsaw business in the 70's they promoted them. You need a powerful saw. A lot of patience. Chains sharpened for ripping, etc.
I suppose it wouldn't take a lot of engineering to make a guide which would follow the straight 2x4 you nail to the log. At least that's the way I recall them working.
I would sooner get even the most basic band saw for ripping.

I have milled alot of wood with the grandberg alaskan mill. You need a powerful saw, at least 90cc. I use a husky 394-XP that is 94 cc. The Stihl 120 or the Husky 3010 would be better. Its rough, hard work and slow. Plan on most of a saturday to mill up one large hardwood log. On the upside you can have alot of free logs in any dimension you want. Drying is slow and you will lose alot to cracking.

A small bandsaw mill is much better, but if you have a big saw them Alsakan jig is cheap.

I would think they would be great for making a big beam out of a big log, but not for regular dimension lumber. As mentioned, chain saws are not very good for ripping with the grain. And LOTS of waste, with the wide saw kerf.

I used a demo one Saturday at the shop I worked at, Brought in a pickup load of pine logs and sawed enough 1/2" clapboard siding for a playhouse I was building my daughter
8" x 8" x 6" using a Jonsered 2094 and a skip tooth chain

Yep BTDT and still own one and let me say ya they work but if you really want any lumber they are at best a joke. Ok if you need a board or 2 but no good if you want much lumber and they are very hard on the person and the saw
