When I was young and folish and had good eye sight, I would take the transformer apart and look for the wire that usually burned off the big wire connected to either the primary or secondary wires. I would carefully unwrap one coil, use a match to burn off the insulation on the wire and then solder it back to input wire or output wire.
To find a replacement transformer is next to impossible. Most transformers have multiple secondaries, some are tapped too. No way of knowing what the voltages are either. No way of knowing if a filter capacitor is shorted and caused your problem in the first place.
You may want to take the insides out of the old sterio and store something inside it. Make a beer cooler or something. Install a different sterio. LOL
