OT: Stereo Transformer

I have a magnavox stereo with a billion 54-25P transformer that I think is bad (voltage in, none coming out). Does anyone have any experience or advice for finding a replacement part? Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the suggestion but they did not have anything to match what I need. The stereo will run on batteries, so maybe that is how it will be from now on.
Thanks again,
LonM

If you can find the voltage rating, and turns ratio 9or Vin Vout) a substitution is pretty easy. If it has more than one output, it is tougher.
Another option is to solder in leads to the battery compartment, and put a charger on it with Nicads in place of the one way cells. Jim

Build a battery eliminator power supply. Piece of cake for a good technician. Built several years ago for 90 volts dc. Only needed rectifier and 4 resistors. Half wave dc. Maybe filter capacitor. Good luck.

Ham radio operator could help you too.

Probably has a heat-sensing fuse just under the tape over the windings. Check primary with a ohm meter. Secondary too for that matter. Probably just a fuse.

When I was young and folish and had good eye sight, I would take the transformer apart and look for the wire that usually burned off the big wire connected to either the primary or secondary wires. I would carefully unwrap one coil, use a match to burn off the insulation on the wire and then solder it back to input wire or output wire.

To find a replacement transformer is next to impossible. Most transformers have multiple secondaries, some are tapped too. No way of knowing what the voltages are either. No way of knowing if a filter capacitor is shorted and caused your problem in the first place.

You may want to take the insides out of the old sterio and store something inside it. Make a beer cooler or something. Install a different sterio. LOL

Thanks for all the suggestions- the cooler idea sounds about the most simple to convert to :)
Since I like to dig around in machinery, I'll take apart the transformer and learn about it, and then try to create an alternative to it or buy a whole bunch of batteries.
I always enjoy reading on this site- so many good minds willing to share ideas!
Thanks,
LonM
