Back when my Grand-dad had his portable sawmill (100 years ago, plus or minus) they used to move the mill From woodlot to woodlot because it was more practical to go to the timber than to bring the logs to a stationary mill when all they had to transport the logs was teams of horses and old wooden wagon gears... often over pretty poor roads in thw fall, winter and spring times when they sawed. They used to like to set up near a pond or good flowing creek or river so they had water for the Steamer they used for power.
