For 35 year old tractors, the 574 is a bit easier to repair the PTO clutch and replace the hydraulic filter. I also like the fact that shifting-slop can usually be repaired from outside the transmission. The diesel has a slight bit more horsepower and torque but it will be expensive to maintain the fuelling system as B&D stated.
I have owned both and still have the 574 gas. I don't put many hours on per year and need the gasser to always start in winter to plow the lane.
