IH 574 and JD 2020

Real quick comparison, how would these two compare? I've got experience with a 574 gas and I'm going to look at a 2020 diesel. I'm just looking to see what you guys say about their differences.

Thanks

Diesel costs more gallon. Diesel injection systems are $$$ to service. Gasoline starts better in the winter. Diesel tractor cost more than the "equivalent" diesel.
There should be newer tractors out there for similar ammounts of $.

I've owned both. Pretty similar as to operation.

Off road diesel and taxed gasoline are pretty similar in price right now, when you factor in the better "mileage" of the diesel.

Depends on what you're using the tractor for. Lots of tillage, baling, sustained use, go for the diesel.

Utility work around the place, feeding, and especially if you're in a cold climate and need to use it in winter, go for the gas.

The IH 574 transmission is miserable to shift. IH made pretty good row crop tractors but really fell on their face for a utility tractor in the late 60s and 70s.

The JD 2020 was a good utility tractor and the diesels in them where just about bullet proof. Just make sure the hydraulic system is operating OK. You can put some serious money into it there if you have to hire the work done.

As to those choosing Gas over diesel. It seems like the older gas tractors don't run the best on the newer formula gas. It seems like you are always having to adjust/play with them to run half way right. Most of the time a diesel will run more consistent.

Deere realy fell on their face with that 2020 as well, from a used to be Deere guy I would not own one of them. the 2020 compaires to the Ford 3 cylinder 4000 and it is a way better tractor. Had 2 of them and drove the 2020 at work and you would not believe how bad that Deere was.

For 35 year old tractors, the 574 is a bit easier to repair the PTO clutch and replace the hydraulic filter. I also like the fact that shifting-slop can usually be repaired from outside the transmission. The diesel has a slight bit more horsepower and torque but it will be expensive to maintain the fuelling system as B&D stated.

I have owned both and still have the 574 gas. I don't put many hours on per year and need the gasser to always start in winter to plow the lane.

I have a JD 2020 that my great uncle bought new. It is a diesel with the Hi-Lo shift. It is showing 9700 hours on it. It has been overhauled at 8000 hours and three clutches.

The first ten years he owned this tractor it plowed over two hundred acres each year. Then pulled a ten foot disk back over the same ground. That tractor will take 3-16 mounted plows and run with them.

There where many sold right around here and the guys liked them and had few issues. So I guess everyone had different likes and dislikes.
