Mike, It's hard to say what caused the bus bar to arc, it just happens over time. Moisture could have caused it, electrolysis, who knows? The bad connection between the breaker and bus bar caused excessive heat and that's what caused the breaker to trip. The heat also weakened the way the breaker pinched the bus bar and the more heat caused more arking.
If the problem continues, you have 2 choices. One is to replace the load center and the other is to use a second 100 amp breaker as your main and back feed through the second breaker to power your load center. The first is the best choice.
Were both sides of the main bad? If only one side was bad, you may try shifting the large 110v circuits to the good side.
