The crane flight was using a Light Sport Aircraft. LSAs are not permitted to be used for commercial purposes; any LSA pilot knows that. It's on the test. It sounds like the FAA has been very proactive in getting this organization a waiver.
As for your buddy, anyone who has driven through Ohio more than once or twice should know better than to volunteer any information to an Ohio cop. The only thing surprising is that he hasn't yet managed to take himself out of the gene pool.
