Jim, Do not misunderstand me. Perhaps Rome had some merits in their idea to Christianize the European Heathen tribes by assimulating their holidays into Christiandom, yet, America was founded not merely Christian, but Protestant. If you ever read Washington's first Thanksgiving address you will see that he is not expecting a seperation between Christian faith and values and the public arena, but a seperation between Roman Christmas and a Protestant Thanksgiving. He made no bones about our need to thank God for our good fortune. Our founders were but a generation removed from Rome's persecution. Christmas was a large symbol of Rome. I understand that time has elapsed since then. I am not denouncing Christmas, yet, I do have my reservations, and I don't get crazy when others do not give the day obscured into our culture under questionable circumstances.
