Having grown up Catholic I can tell you that Santa Claus is not a church sanctioned figure of Christmas. For that matter I have heard of him being formally affiliated with the Church in any way. I never heard materialism stressed as a positive and anymore the Catholic Church seems to be the only public voice condemning materialism. Most of the immigration to America prior to the Revolution was from Northern European countries where the Catholic Church had been muted if not driven out of for quite sometime. The Pilgrims were not running from the Catholic Church in England but rather the Church of England who was the pre-eminent religious authority there. The Catholic Church is not the only religious entity that was subject to the customs of the locals that practiced it. How else can you explain the existence of the hundreds of variations of Protestant teachings in Europe and the Americas.
