The more expensive mowers have better alternators/voltage regulators built in. Also, battery maintaince is very important along with desulfating the battery before it goes bad. Yes, charging the battery, expecially before winter is very important.
I know a person who's diode in the charging system drains the mower battery. That isn't a good thing in the winter, when the battery can freeze.
When you overcharge a battery and cause it to boil, you can do extensive damage to the plates.
Most people do nothing to the their batteries except replace them when they fail. It is possible to extend the life of a battery with the proper charger.
