Our neck of the woods has grizzlies and there were several attach this year and people killed. During hunting season the bears key on gunshots and know, as a minimum, they"ll be a gut pile. Sometimes they claim the kill and the game department will issue a new tag for the game. I believe the bears are recovered here and their numbers are growing. Since they require 50 sq miles minimum per adult, they have to start moving out from their strongholds and that means more chance of bear-human interactions. Four grizzly bears were killed within 5 miles of where I live, crossing the highway or killing free ranging chickens.
A women got attacked by a black bear in Missoula while jogging on a city trail and she fought the bear off and he ran. The next person may not be that lucky. I imagine back East where more people are retiring into forested areas, there is more opportunity for bear-human contacts and they"ll me a lot more of these instances.
