I'd just chalk it up to experience, or as you put it, education. Being angry isn't going to change anything. Trying to collect on it in court is a waste of time. It is fortunate that no one got hurt. A bad mistake is one that money can't fix.
Maybe the kid can do some work for you to help pay for it. I would ask the parent's about their auto policy, to see if he is covered, maybe ask your agent to help.
