Here's a way to get blood from a turnip. Kinda out of left field, a few details missing, but these are the basics. 1- file small claims/conciliation court suit. Some states have $3k limit, others $5k. 2- contact Judge Judy, Joe Brown, or any of the other TV Judge Shows. 3- if they accept you, get free trip to Shakey Town & get on TV for 15 minutes to present your case. If you don't get accepted for the TV show, you can always cancel your suit & try to work out something else. 4- if you win, you get paid. Now the fine points. The loser doesn't actually pay. They have a fund to cover each case, usually same as your state limits. Awards are paid from this fund, if anything left over, both sides split what is left. Eg: $5k available, award is $2995, Plaintiff gets the $2995, then they split the remaining $2005. Joe Brown believes strongly in the old principle of a Bailment. "If you borrow something, it is your responsibility to return it in the same condition, absent ordinary wear & tear. Running in a ditch & causing damage is not ordinary wear & tear". If you don't get accepted on the TV show & cancel your case, you can always try to work out something else. Like have the kid work some of it off by doing yard clean up, shovel snow, mow lawn, paint a building, etc. WJ
