The 30% better fuel efficiency from diesel is rather more important here in UK when we are paying around $8 a ( US )gallon for diesel and gas . I don't think there will be anyone running a truck or SUV on gas , unless they are a soccer player or sell happy candy . The one problem we have here now is that small diesels are getting expensive and complicated , and don't like short journeys without getting smogged up .
