I posted this down in the crop talk, but only 1 response there so:
I work with a museum that is looking at trying to grow some oats. We already grow wheat and sell it ground during a harvest festival in Oct. The suggestion of growing oats came up and we figured we had nothing to lose, but we have no idea where to begin.
We figure we can bind it and then send it through a thresher to get it clean. So I guess the sort of hard part is done.
What we don't know is what type of oat we should try. We are located in the Bay Area of California which is mild winters (maybe 3 dozen nights below 32) and summers have a dozen or two days over 100. Mostly in the 80s-90s during the summer. We run out of rain about mid May (while we would prefer not to water after that point it isn't an endall). We are looking for a heavier oat that will process well in our ancient thresher. The property is organic, so we would need something along those lines.
