My thought to that Is even in the 1880's because the letters were shaped and students copied them didn't mean the art part (for lack of better words) of it couldn't be mastered to the master letters shown so writing still became an individual facsimile in form. but was still legible to most readers.
The only writings I have trouble reading are from many of our smartest people.. Doctors , Lawyers,( Sorry John T) and CEOs.
