So then does it have 3 forward gears or 4???? If it has 3 then it is a 2N if 4 an 8N. As for the volts you get 6.3 with the points open and 2 something with them closed is about what you should get. You did remember to put the rotor back in didn't you?? Yes I ask because I have seen that many times and no rotor no spark. Take a old plug and gap it as wide as you can say about 3/16 or so and hook it to one of the plug wires and spin it over holding it on the block some place. You should get a good blue/white spark that jumps that gap
