I learned it is not safe at all to weld on rims that have tires on them, even if they are flat and have the valve stems removed. Hope you had them off or got lucky. There is a vid on youtube of a truck tire on a rim and they weld a short time and then the heat builds and starts fumes on fire and explodes wildly. Once it starts, it happens in a hurry and there is no stopping it.
