You did not have it tight. You will not get it tight with pipe wrenches alone in one setting. Like others have told you here. Tighten it as tight as you can. Then hit the other end of the axle as hard as you can with a sledge hammer several times. Then re-tighten the nut. Do this until the nut will not turn anymore.
Also take a small hammer an rap on the blades. When they are tight they will ring like a bell. When loose they sound like a ripe water melon kind of a thud. Start at the nut end and check every blad toward the other end. When you have it really tight they will all ring. The first few times the first blade or two will ring and the rest will not.
