Last one I did, per advice of Grandpa was to put it together, tighten it as tight as I could.. Whack opposite end with BFH and repeat.. Do this until the nut seems to "stay tight", then mount the gang back on the disk and go to work.
My JD disk had a "lock tab", the Case I have now has a Castellated nut and cotter pin.
As for your wasted axle.. I had one break once.. I found one from a junk disc similar to mine, but the length was different.. Local weld shop fixed it right up for me. Think I paid $50 for the junk disc (and got a bunch of extra parts) and $25 to the weld shop.
