That's another good reason the wood should of been split last winter, some woods do not dry unless split, especially Birch. I got a wood moisture tester for Christmas last year and it has really opened my eyes.
With the newer stoves with secondary air it is most important as the steam given off by the vaporizing moisture reduces the secondary combustion.
