Got hit!!!!! pictures of wood pile

Well My digit center finger got hit with a small hornet and it still hurts. I did put an aspirin paste on it and that helped but didn't stop the pain. Now it's pain killers all over again. That hand (right hand) is used for running the valve on the splitter and also used to send messages (using one digit)to people who try and run folks off the road. My son and daughter is doing all the work while is sit my derriere in a chair with cushion and operate the valve. Good job for a 76 year old duffer.Just going to finish our wood pile tomorrow then start on my daughters wood pile. Using the 706 to load the truck along with the 722 bobcat. Changed filter on the splitter -150 micron, new hyd oil.new throttle control. We built the splitter from scratch, 37 ton splitting power.Splits 20 cord a year since 2004.Son covered underneath the deck with PVC panels so no need to tarp the top any more. Wood stays dry. If the hornets come again, I'm ready with hornet spray.Sure hurts like sin. Watch out for em around freshly split wood. Any of you getting hit when doing wood??? Regards LOU & VICTOR

Last time I was hit happened to be one of those white face ground hornets. at first it felt like a shock from the weed eater I was running as it was where my arm was just above the spark plug but just as fast it felt like it was on fire. still felt like a bad burn for several weeks. I still have a mark where it looks like it took a bite as it left.

When it happened I threw down the weed eater and the hornet proceeded attacking it as it was still running. Very aggressive for its size.
Hope you never develop an allergic reaction to them.

ROY.Almost Leary about going to the wood pile tomorrow. Darn hornets sure hurt. So far no allergy reaction. The wood seems seasoned so not much (if any) sap when split. Mostly white oak, some red oak, and maple.Still hornets fly around the split wood .Sure hope to get it all done with out any more stings. I would bet there are a lot of wood cutters that get stung. We were hoping the wood would be delivered before the hornets/wasps/ bees showed up. No Such Luck .It's a toss of the coin. Regards LOU & Victor.

I haven't worked at wood cutting & splitting for a couple years due to health issues . I finally decided to get several piles of wood split that had been laying for a couple years . Man all i've been finding are those large black ants with wings . Pouring oil & gas on the wood & the escapies . Ants give me the chills . I always enjoyed cutting the dead trees , dragging them into my yard with my old Ford tractor, then chunking & splitting the logs . It seems ageing, illnesses & depression makes me even more depressed .I love working my saws , my 20 ton splitter & my tractor . Now about bee stings . Years ago , I got hit twice on my ear lobes by those very large boring bees . It felt like their stingers were like srews when they pulled them out & left . Talk about a hole & pain . Take care & watch out for those nasty bees . God bless, Ken

Ken. Sounds like we have a lot in common. I use to go to the woods and gather our winters supply from the county forest land. Cut it with an OLD Roper (two man gas saw from Sears)chain saw.Brought up a saw rig that would ring in your ears for what seemed like forever.lol.Did that for many years. Then in 1985 bad health issues started. I Still try and help the son & daughter with what ever I can. Talk about depression, It comes and goes, but if I can be of some help , makes me feel worth while. Now about the ants, Mostly termite workers with wings, and I too used gasoline with old motor oil and a match.Haven't seen any in this supply of wood as yet.Weather is going to hold us back if it rains tomorrow. Roys Idea of a smoke fire would work but with my luck, The wind would blow the smoke back to me. lol.Yep folks keep safe and watch out for those blasted hornets. Regards LOU.

Better be careful Lou..... Can get allergic to them from one day to the next it seems. Wouldn't hurt to have the doctor set you and whoever is working in a situation like that up with a bee sting kit.

My first (and only) bout with hornets was when I was 7. Shot a nest that was a hundred foot or so away. Thought they threw the bullet back at me.
All I remember was pulling the trigger and getting ready to load another shell then laying on the ground screaming. Few minutes later, had a head like a basketball and both eyes swelled shut.

Split wood burns faster.People go nuts with wood splitters and split evey thing.Small rounds will last longer for night time fires.I avoid working up wood until several frosts have happened.Ground bees and hornets will get you ,they come out of holes in the ground near stumps. The brown recluse spider is a danger around wood piles, worse than bees or hornets.Best to wear gloves handling firewood.

I agree. People laugh at me when I'm wearing jeans, boots, long sleeve shirts or even a sweatshirt in the summer along with leather gloves while I'm outdoors. But, I don't worry too much about bees, flies, hornets, skeeters etc. Just put an addition on a barn where I had to pull off the soffit and fascia boards to extend the roof. Wasps had nests all along the underside, probably 20-30 ft long. I was swatting them with my gloves and waving them off with my cap while I worked to get the boards off. Seems like they got angrier as time went on. Finally got the boards removed so I could spray the exposed nests. Still had a few coming back until I pulled all the drip edge down to which the nests were attached. Had a few fly into the side of my head but didn't get stung once. Guess I was lucky. But ground hornets are the worst. They WILL chase you and are persistent little buggers. That's one of the reasons I like the northern climate. Come this time of year when temperatures drop, things quiet down and I can walk the fields without worrying about stirring up a hornet's nest.

That's another good reason the wood should of been split last winter, some woods do not dry unless split, especially Birch. I got a wood moisture tester for Christmas last year and it has really opened my eyes.
With the newer stoves with secondary air it is most important as the steam given off by the vaporizing moisture reduces the secondary combustion.

Ha I'm cutting wood right now and putting it directly in the OWB and have been doing so for years with good results.

Real nice wood splitter, also good looling wood pile.
Years ago I used to help my FIL get his winter wood , we would start in Aug. or Sept. cut about 7or 8 cords of wood for the winter, Had some great times helping him. He always said we got 2heatsfromthe wood .The cutting & stacking it by the house and the second from burning it in the fireplace.
