While growing up on the farm we bought and stored our winter supply of potatoes without issue. Our cellar was different than what would be used today by most people. We had stable clay soil below the top soil so the walls were earthen as well as the floor. The top was an uninsulated wooded/tar paper roof with soil piled over it which provided the insulation.
Each fall we bought 200# or potatoes, at least one bushel of apples, etc.
You might want to read the book called Root Cellaring to obtain a lot of great information.
