just a quicky.... Guy told me how to take care of my cellar problem and how to store some stuff. Question is, garden time is about gone so folks have pretty much sold/given everything. We have a bulk store nearby where resteraunts shop. Can I buy bags of potatoes, carrots, (roots).. and take them out of the plastic bags/nets and store them?

Also, the guy said just to keep the temp between freezing and 50 degrees and the moisture down below 80 percent and everything would be fine....

True????? I don't wanna have to carry out more rotten taters and carrots.....

Dave if it was me I would buy as needed and let the
other guy worry about the spoilage.

Might be cheaper now but if you throw a 1/3 of it out
the cost goes up real fast.

Cheaper to buy at the store also and living over here, always have fresh stuff from spain, italy, etc year round. Big thing is being able to buy carrots this time of year for 3 bucks for a 50 pound sack (for the horses) and storing some apples and pears from the orchards that ripen in storage.....

Guess I'll just concentrate on a beer/drink storage area and it's a good place for rainwater storage with some 1000 liter tanks.....

My parents stored potatos in the basement. The usually last through the winter but become a bit shriveled and start growing by early spring (still edible). Onions didnt work so well so they resided in one of the refridgorator trays (spanish) or got dehydrated (yellow and white). Mom canned the carrots. Make sure you don't leave anything in a plastic bag. It will rot.

While growing up on the farm we bought and stored our winter supply of potatoes without issue. Our cellar was different than what would be used today by most people. We had stable clay soil below the top soil so the walls were earthen as well as the floor. The top was an uninsulated wooded/tar paper roof with soil piled over it which provided the insulation.

Each fall we bought 200# or potatoes, at least one bushel of apples, etc.

You might want to read the book called Root Cellaring to obtain a lot of great information.

If I could get a deal like that on carrots and had
horses, yes I would throw a few bags in the cellar.

On the positive (???) side, just came from the place I bought carrots and they were scrawney and about shot............ Screwy year this year.....

(quoted from post at 06:53:36 09/27/11) Why do you store your rainwater? That is a "desert"practice.Dont you guys have LOTS of rain?

Not so's you'd notice........... Alo have to pay for water in AND out....

Carrots will like it fine, taters not so much- too humid.

Wouldn't be much point in storing potatoes around here, unless you grew them yourself. Stores feature them as a "loss leader" from time to time, often enough so you never pay full price if you watch the sale circulars.
