I've never had a Jetta, but I had a 1987 Fox fuel injected gas Volswagen (1.8 L ?)a few years ago. Engine would run fine then bog down, especially under load. Let car sit a while and it would start right back up and run fine for a while.
After much problem determination by supposedly qualified Volkswagen technicians, it ended up being a bad fuel pump in the fuel tank.
