Daughter's car. She has an issue where the car suddenly started running pretty poorly. Engine stumbles at idle as well as higher RPM and is short of power. Nursed it to my driveway and read codes and all I get are error codes. CEL is clearly on (sometimes flashing), but reader does not recognize it as on and can't reset. Had one code indicate a cylinder 3 misfire so went ahead and put coil into it as well as plugs/wires. No help. Codes are meaningless only indicates something like "ER - no definition available"

Could the ECU have failed? How would I tell?

Thanks,

Kirk

Is it muti port injection? If so that misfire could be the injector. Sons car did that. new injector fixed it with up. Also check the fuel pressure regulator and fuel pressure. Supprising how many FI cars and trucks have been fixed witha simple fuel filter change.

We have a Jetta TDI that had similar issues. It ended up being the air-mass sensor. Bora Parts is one place you can get reasonably priced parts.

Should have added it is a 2.0 gas engine.

Hate to throw more parts at it than I have without a little indication of what system is involved.

was it raining when this happened? my daughters car had a cracked coil pack that made the car do about the same things as your daughters. i took the coil off and applied jb weld to the case. fixed it right up

I wasn't raining, but I have done coil, plugs, and wires with no change in symptoms. Just wish it would spit some sort of code out to suggest a direction to go.

Thanks,

Kirk

See if you can find someone with a VAG-Com. That is Audi groups proprietary obd system. With that cable and the right software you can see right into the whole shebang to view systems. There is a list here of guys who have them. Some want money, some just want beer.

Kirk,

I've never had a Jetta, but I had a 1987 Fox fuel injected gas Volswagen (1.8 L ?)a few years ago. Engine would run fine then bog down, especially under load. Let car sit a while and it would start right back up and run fine for a while.

After much problem determination by supposedly qualified Volkswagen technicians, it ended up being a bad fuel pump in the fuel tank.

Good luck with your diagnosis.

How much fuel is in the tank? There was just a show on yesterday kinda like a television car talk where these two guys go and fix cars that noone else can figure out. Had an Audi doing about what you are saying (don't remember the codes) and the pickup tube in the tank had a rust hole. When under a quarter or so tank, it would suck air and car wouldn't run right.
As far as your CEL, have you treid disconnecting the battery for a couple minutes to reset?

Always like it when others follow up with results so here is mine.

Rain let up yesterday and I went out and had a final look at things before punting and taking it down to the mechanic. Found a vacuum leak at the fuel pressure regulator. Runs fine again, probably kind of a "double whammy", leak would lean things out and pressure regulator not going to work right.
