Not a good choice for a reliable work truck/daily driver. The later ones are supposed to be "better". They have head gasket problems along with EGR problems. However, If you want to buy one and then dump an additional 6 grand into it it could be an AMAZING truck with very high reliability and it could make boat loads of power. This would involve putting head studs in, an EGR delete an exhaust intake and tuner.
I would suggest a 99 7.3 if your a ford fan, forged pistons in early 7.3s make them more forgiving to power add ons. or If you are looking for a diesel in general you cannot got wrong with a 24v or common rail cummins. I do not include 12v cummins in this because I recommend a killer dowl pin delete kit (24v has it to but it is less prominent to have a problem)
