I am looking at a different pickup and I was wondering what the pros and cons of the 6.0 ford diesel are. This will be no newer then 2005. The ones that I am looking at are around 150000 miles.

My buddy has one and has had have all the injectors replaced to the tune of over 3 grand. They have lots of power and run good though.

a 6.0 with 150K miles is trouble waiting to happen. You might get a good one but most likely you will be putting lots of money in it to keep it going, and I'm talking thousand dollar bills not hundred. Unless you really need a diesel you should not buy a diesel and it only getting worse with the emissions requirements. There are lots of complex systems that are very expensive. A gasser will be much cheaper in the long run unless you are doing heavy towing on a regular basis.

Go to a Dodge, GM, or even another Ford dealer and tell them you have that exact truck and want to trade it in and see what their reaction is.

Find yourself a 2007 Classic Duramax, it"s the best engine in the series, pre-exhaust fluid, post injector and head problems. Mines flirtin" with 190K and has had 1 battery and 1 front wheel bearing assembly. It gets relatively good mileage (not like the Dodge guys that 25 mpg with a 3500 dually ;).

Pros: decent styling

Cons: JUNK engine...

anything i have to remove the cab to replce haed gaskets or egr valves i would never buy. The VGT veins are known to stick.

These engines are great for performance, but for a daily driver they do not hold up very well.

i had a 06 ford with the 6 liter in it and i wanted to trade it. no one wanted it anywhere around me. i live in sc and i tryed to trade it in tn, nc,ga, and only place i found that would take it was florida which was 400 miles away and 6 hr ride. they had 50 or so of them on the lot but was selling dodges like hotcakes. that is what i went to get and brought it back home. 05 dodge 3500 cummins. best truck i ever had and plenty of power and good fuel mileage. the ford crew cab had plenty of room in the front and back but not worth all the problems with the engine.

Daughter has a 2004 F -250,Son inlaw 2005 F-350 both 6.0. Both had turbo & both had intercooler issues,F-250 had head gaskets replaced. Both treated like a baby. Both ,junk. Turbo making noise as we speak on the F-250 for the second time. Find something with a 7.3 if you want a Ford .Duramax is what I drive .Luv it no problems at all 130000 miles.

Get your jogging shoes on and run. Run very far and fast from that 6.0. I have a "06 350 dually with 108k. This thing has cost me more in repairs out of my pocket than my total vehicle repairs since I started driving 40 years ago. This is on top of the estimated 30-40k in warranty work. Of the other 10 Ford trucks that I bought new I had one $5.00 warranty claim. I may never own another Ford after this.

Had that truck. Kept it five years. Not much use after couple runs to the UP of mich. Always unpredictable. Scared to keep it. Lost ten grand for five years and 20K miles. Dealer in Ohio bought it. Second diesel in my lifetime. Don't want another. First was Mercedes 4 cyl. First trip to dealer cost more than I paid for car. Used of course. Dave

Honestly, you're not gonna find too many pro's on a 6.0 and if you do,they're from die hard Ford fans who are too proud to admit Ford screwed up BIG!

If you HAVE to buy a Ford AND it has to be a diesel, look for a 7.3 liter mill.Other wise,a Cummins or Duramax is a better choice.

Been here before on this topic. I'm a former 6.0 owner. Lost about 10 grand on trade after 2 yrs. Quick! Name one engine that cost the manufacturer 1 Billion dollars. Yup. The 6.0 cost Ford 1 Billion in warranty. Thats just on the engine-not claims on truck issues. Part of the problem was there was a very steep learning curve for the techs at the dealerships. There are folks who will say otherwise but there are also folks that will drive "their" brand even if it has square wheels. Oh, and I'm a veeeeery happy Dodge Cummins owner since 06!

I have a 7.3 Powerstroke and a 5.9 Cummins. The only real experience that I have with 6.0s is that we have 5 of them at work. They mostly just haul a diesel tank and a tool box, but sometimes they pull 14000 lb trailers. They've got around 100000 on them, now. I don't know why, but haven't had any problems with any of them. I think that its probably because they get regular maintenance and don't get worked hard all the time. They're also all stock. A lot of people have trouble with them when they put chips in them.
Personally, I wouldn't buy one unless I got it cheap enough that I could afford to upgrade the head studs, turbo return line, EGR cooler, etc.

hi--i dont have a 6.0 but i have a 5.4 sitting in the shop with head gasket issue. **EVERYONE**
i have spoke with and stuff ive read on comp.
says 6.0 is junk---head gaskets and heads.
this comes from a lifelong (til now) ford driver.

"The proof is in the pudding", as the old saying goes.
Aside from the 1 billion loss at FORD, look at the decisons that they made, including bringing the light diesel inhouse with a FORD designed engine.
Would they spend all of THAT money, time, effort, and risk if the 6.0 and others after the 7.3 had been anywhere near OK?
You can always find a few 6.0 owners that for whatever reasons have not had problems, or worse yet would never admit it.

Not a good choice for a reliable work truck/daily driver. The later ones are supposed to be "better". They have head gasket problems along with EGR problems. However, If you want to buy one and then dump an additional 6 grand into it it could be an AMAZING truck with very high reliability and it could make boat loads of power. This would involve putting head studs in, an EGR delete an exhaust intake and tuner.

I would suggest a 99 7.3 if your a ford fan, forged pistons in early 7.3s make them more forgiving to power add ons. or If you are looking for a diesel in general you cannot got wrong with a 24v or common rail cummins. I do not include 12v cummins in this because I recommend a killer dowl pin delete kit (24v has it to but it is less prominent to have a problem)

I have a 93 N/A 7.3 Ford 1Ton, good truck, no problems except fan clutch at 145000. Son has a 6.0 in a 1Ton, nothing but problems. They blow head gaskets like popcorn.
I think all of these guys on here will agree with me, you can't hold that amount of compression using studs for head bolts and that is what the 6.0 has.
I would suggest, walking away from the 6.0.

EGR problems with the earlier models - friction fit, later were threaded. We installed an EGR Delete kit and now ours doesn't leak coolant... We bought our '04 almost 2 years ago, replacing our '92 non-turbo 7.3L F-350. At that time it had 190 000 Km (118 000 mi). We figured that if it hadn't blown the head by then, it wouldn't. Now has 250 000km and no problems other than thirst. Good and powerful, just thirsty. We switched over to synthetic, and might run that all the time now.

everyone will have their opinion about the 6.0, had a 7.3 iron horse, yea, should have kept it! my 6.0 only had one turbo 30k mi and air charge box and blue tubes hoses 40k mi, one injector 30k mi, comp re-flash60k mi, under warranty, has 102k now, possible egr needing replacing. running lube stuff in fuel.... it"s a 2wd, not chipped, runs stock pulling my goose with tractor to shows, 12k 5th r-v to vacation, once in a while, never floor it to get power up hills, down shift or run slow enough to keep from over heating.....knock on wood, so far , so good.

Do yourself and your wallet a favor and don't even look at it.
My son has one, been in the shop more than on the road,HATES it

I have a 2005 6.0 and spent my first $ in repairs today when I replaced the alternator.

Either I am lucky or the later ones really did have the problems solved.
