I can't speak for gophers but here's the deal with moles. It's a war of attrition and trapping or killing them is the only way to get ahead. You can try killing the grubs in your yard but be aware that moles eat earthworms too. And lots of them. It's a main staple of their diet. Getting rid of earthworms would be difficult and undesirable. Putting gum in the holes is an old wives tale. People will swear that it works but moles are constantly moving around and building new tunnels and when the weather gets hot they dig deeper ones that you don't see. Trust me they don't get "chased away" by a stick of gum. What can you do? Traps, a good cat or dog or like my ol' Grandpa used to do. Sit in a lawn chair with a 12 gauge and watch for the dirt to move. It's kind of boring but entertaining when you do blast one. You might get a few with poison but I personally think it's a waste of money. Gassing them might work a little but whenever moles sense trouble they close off their tunnels. You won't get many this way and you have no real way of knowing if it even works. I know this doesn't sound very encouraging and it may depend on how many you're dealing with but if there are lots of them around you may just have to learn to live with them.
