OT —Killing golphers and moles?

I just had another seedling tree drug underground and now they are camping out next to my larger trees and eating the roots out from under them I suppose. These are trees I planted this spring.

I was wondering if anyone here has figured out the best method of controlling these dang things?

My grand dad always had us put juicy fruit gum in the holes.... after about 4-5 packs and 3-4 days we wouldnt see any new holes.

(quoted from post at 16:50:05 07/28/11) Cats yep I never have a problem with them other then finding them dead in the yard, the moles that is
Well I guess that's the reason it didn't work for me :!:
I used "bubble gum" and two days later they were all blowing bubbles :?:
Seriously though--I have heard that will work but havn't tried it.
The best thing I have tried is to spray starting fluid into the hole and cover entrance and exit, if there is one. I know it will work with Chipmunks.

the hi-yield mole and gopher poison works good, i am attaching a link. also, ace hardware carrys a product called mole-nots. it comes in a yellow funnel shaped can. works well also.
poke here

A machine called "Rodenator" or drop hose from exhaust pipe of a running gasoline engine into hole.

I've also heard if you get rid of the grubs gopher move on.

I had terrible problem with the last year and early this spring. Huge tunnels all over yard. Hit the yard heavy with weed and feed last fall and early this spring. Couple weeks later all activity stopped and haven't seen any since. Whatever is in that stinky granular stuff, it chased them away.

hmmm, seems to be some interesting suggestions here.

My grocery list at tractor supply is growing daily between locust poison and mole remedies.

I'm going to broadcast some bug killer around the trees to take the grubs out. I honestly think they are homing in on the trees since that is the only place that has damp and diggable soil. (yes, I said diggable!)

The gum remedy beats all I've ever heard. I wonder why that works? Interesting indeed.

I was talking to a good fella last night about my tractor. He seemed to have a cat problem. I think I'll pay him another visit and let loose a couple of cats to see if they'll clean the place up.

The chewing gun is supposed to cause "bowl blockage"
Concerning the bug spray--I have read that there is a certain time of the year that the grub kill is the most effective. I think this will only give limited results because these pests also eat earthworms.

I can't speak for gophers but here's the deal with moles. It's a war of attrition and trapping or killing them is the only way to get ahead. You can try killing the grubs in your yard but be aware that moles eat earthworms too. And lots of them. It's a main staple of their diet. Getting rid of earthworms would be difficult and undesirable. Putting gum in the holes is an old wives tale. People will swear that it works but moles are constantly moving around and building new tunnels and when the weather gets hot they dig deeper ones that you don't see. Trust me they don't get "chased away" by a stick of gum. What can you do? Traps, a good cat or dog or like my ol' Grandpa used to do. Sit in a lawn chair with a 12 gauge and watch for the dirt to move. It's kind of boring but entertaining when you do blast one. You might get a few with poison but I personally think it's a waste of money. Gassing them might work a little but whenever moles sense trouble they close off their tunnels. You won't get many this way and you have no real way of knowing if it even works. I know this doesn't sound very encouraging and it may depend on how many you're dealing with but if there are lots of them around you may just have to learn to live with them.

this is what I'm trying. 5 gal bucket, fill 3/4 full of water, lean a board up to the top, put sun flower seeds in the water to cover the water. (use seed in the shell) the water needs to be deep enough that they can't toutch the bottem and 2 in from the top. works on golphers, got 6 of them this past week end. David

Those little blue pellets you get at the farm stores for rats will remove the gophers. Just sprinkle a small hand full around your trees and bushes. The take them back to their dens with cheeks full. Not a clue about moles. Never had many around and the dog seems to find them after you see a runner. I helped him get one with a fork several years back. He doesn't seem to need help anymore.

juicy fruit gum does work, I used it on my yard in Mo. with-in a couple of weeks they were all gone. they are not able to dijest it and they die.

use the chemical that you use to kill the weavel in your wheat bin. Phostoxin, not sure about the spelling. have to have license to buy it. make hole in run, drop in pellet & seal the hole. handle with extreme care!

I use steel traps that set across the mole run when they come back trough run it drops and stabs them. Once you learn how to use these traps they are about 95% effective. For golphers use a .410 snake charmer with number 6 or 71/2 shot.

Okay! I've armed myself with some gopher killing stuff last night.

3 mechanical gopher traps. I even figured out how to set them.
5 gopher killin' smoke bombs.
1 package of gopher poison peanuts. ( kinda leary of using since we have pets)
20 gauge with #6 shot for ground penetration.
2 lawn chairs
Margarita mix.

This will be my first gopher hunt! I'll report back on how it goes next week!

Caddy Shack comes to mind................. Maybe Rich can give you some pointers on shooting rodents off the porch..... or at least shooting AT them and have them fall off the porch laughing

I don't think you can do this now a days, but my grandpa use to pack shut all of the holes he could find except one. He'd borrow an almost empty anhydrous tank from FS and then put the hose in the one open hole and then pack dirt around it. Then he would just crack the valve and watch for any leaks. He said it didn't take much.

Again, I wouldn't recommend this as anhydrous is dangerous stuff.

There's only one way to get rid of moles and thats ag lime. The grubs that
moles live on will not live in well limed soil, so called sweet soil, so no
grubs no moles. apply the lime at the rate of three tons per acre and you'll
have no trouble with moles for a long time, plus you'll have a great looking
lawn.
Having said that many times, I know that the advice won't be followed.
It seems that most people just want to kill something.
