I had the same problem with my 60, which basically has the same 6 speed single stick transmission as a late A. My problem was the gearshift lever itself was bent, on the lower end, below the fulcrum ball, and the snap ring that retains the spring had slipped out of place. New gearshift at Deere was $200. After spending $50-$60 for a couple of salvage yard ones that were also bent. The shift quadrant has to be removed to repair this problem. On the 60, the steering shaft pedestal can be unbolted and moved up out of the way to get the quadrant off.
