Shifter Problem on JD '52 A

I have had a 1952 John Deere Model A for a little more than a year. On two occasions it has gotten stuck in second gear. The shift lever is in the second gear slot but it is not in gear. It also will not go into any other gear. Stranger still is that after sitting for awhile, it will work fine. Anyone have this problem or know of a solution?

I have a 48 B and assume the the transmissions work the same... So mine did the same thing... I pulled the top plate off the trans and tightend the square head bolt that holds the shifter fork in place. Don't ask me what that is called, but the problem was obvious when I took a look.

I had the same problem with my 60, which basically has the same 6 speed single stick transmission as a late A.
My problem was the gearshift lever itself was bent, on the lower end, below the fulcrum ball, and the snap ring that retains the spring had slipped out of place.
New gearshift at Deere was $200. After spending $50-$60 for a couple of salvage yard ones that were also bent.
The shift quadrant has to be removed to repair this problem. On the 60, the steering shaft pedestal can be unbolted and moved up out of the way to get the quadrant off.

A little further on the bent gearshift lever. We discovered the bent problem because we found we could rotate the gearshift lever and get the transmission to shift. If bent, the lower ball down inside that moves the forks will move in an elliptical pattern. Sometimes when moving the gearshift, a person unconsciously turns the gearshift ball thus rotating the gearshift shaft.
