First needle & Texas Winter(spear) are 2 different species of grass. Needle grass has a thin "Y" shaped tiny awn and Texas Winter Grass has been referred to as Indian Spear Grass because of its spear-like awn that I my friends & I threw at each others shirts way back in my youth. Needle Grass won't harm livestock(except for getting stuck in sheep's wool) and I've seen some severely infested Texas Winter Grass feed to cows with no ill effects. I wouldn't recommend feeding it to a horse with their delicate digestive system.
