Very easy to replace. Just get the correct one as there are about 4 different advance's available. If you get one from a salvage yard they will tell you "any one will work". I would put a timing light on tractor. If distibutor is good shape,you should be able to time it to tdc at low idle and it should not jump all over the place, then it should gradually advance as you increase rpm. Depending on what dist you have, either 30 or 40 degrees at rated engine speed. If it is like I am thinking it probably is, it will be considerably advanced at part throttle and causing your exhaust to flutter. If you have a rain cap , it will probably be flapping back and forth. To change dist, turn engine to tdc, note positon of rotor, points should be just barely starting to open in normal direction of rotation of dist, pull it off and install other in same orientation.
