distributor

It's not the hard to change a distributor or mag. You need to see where your rotor is pointing and make a sketch then pull the old distributor or mag. THEN DON"T MOVE ENGINE while the distributor is off. Rotate the rotor to the position in your sketch and install it. Use a timing light once you have the engine running to set the timing. Hal

Very easy to replace. Just get the correct one as there are about 4 different advance's available. If you get one from a salvage yard they will tell you "any one will work". I would put a timing light on tractor. If distibutor is good shape, you should be able to time it to tdc at low idle and it should not jump all over the place, then it should gradually advance as you increase rpm. Depending on what dist you have, either 30 or 40 degrees at rated engine speed. If it is like I am thinking it probably is, it will be considerably advanced at part throttle and causing your exhaust to flutter. If you have a rain cap , it will probably be flapping back and forth. To change dist, turn engine to tdc, note positon of rotor, points should be just barely starting to open in normal direction of rotation of dist, pull it off and install other in same orientation.

Not hard to do if you do it correctly hard if you do not. You need to get #1 cylinder at TDC pull the distributor cap off and note where the rotor is pointing. You install the new distributor so the rotor points to the same place when you install the new one but why throw parts at it before you check things. First thing to check is point gap on all 4 lobes of the distributor and make sure they are very close. If they are close then it could be a bad distributor cap or rotor or both or many other simple small problems

Depending on how bad the bushing is worn it may occasionnally miss or run like a three legged dog.
You can check for a worn bushing by rotating the engine til the points close than pushing radially (from the side) in several locations around the shaft, watch the points. They should not move. If you put a dial gauge on the shaft, the shaft should not move more than 0.002".

The other posters have told you how easy it is to replace the distributor once it"s removed provided you don"t rotate the engine. if you do, you"ll have to static time the engine to get it started.Let us know if you have problems and we can walk you through that.
