I cultivate all of my sweet corn to get the majority of grass in the row. Early corn is the toughest as it is slow going and the grass keeps up with it for quite a while.

Once it's about 8 inches I put the hillers on and throw dirt into the row to cover grass and small weeds. Helps brace the plants against those nasty late June / Early July thunderstorms too. I end up leaving the hillers on the rest of the season for corn at that point.

If I have to I'll hit it with some 2-4D early on to get broadleaf weeds. Where I rotated to this year, luckily, I have enough atrazine carry-over that there is nary a broadleaf in sight.

I don't grow enough to justify the cost of expensive herbicides or the hassle of an applicator's license. Just a few acres for roadside, market and a couple of small groceries / restaurants. My biggest ordeal is always late season when the ear worm population explodes...
