sweet corn herbicide

Hey all, my sweet corn patch is a little grassy and is getting hard to keep up with, the corn plants are only about 4 inches at this point. Is there any post emergent herbicide that will work on sweet corn without killing the corn?

I use Duall for grass. Read the label but it should work for you. Check with a farmer friend and he may have a little left over. I think the smallest containor you can get is 2.5 gallon containor which isn't cheap. DoubleR

Impact and atrazine, Callisto or Laudis are other options but 4" foxtail is about the limit. Dual is a pre emerge product not intended for emerged grasses

I assume you mean "hoe" and yes I have one but this patch is about 1 acre and I have niether the time nor the inclination to hoe an acre of corn!!

@ 4 inches that population sounds a bit fat... Going to need make sure it gets enough N.

I cultivate all of my sweet corn to get the majority of grass in the row. Early corn is the toughest as it is slow going and the grass keeps up with it for quite a while.

Once it's about 8 inches I put the hillers on and throw dirt into the row to cover grass and small weeds. Helps brace the plants against those nasty late June / Early July thunderstorms too. I end up leaving the hillers on the rest of the season for corn at that point.

If I have to I'll hit it with some 2-4D early on to get broadleaf weeds. Where I rotated to this year, luckily, I have enough atrazine carry-over that there is nary a broadleaf in sight.

I don't grow enough to justify the cost of expensive herbicides or the hassle of an applicator's license. Just a few acres for roadside, market and a couple of small groceries / restaurants. My biggest ordeal is always late season when the ear worm population explodes...

Hey CJ, get yourself a old rear-tine tiller. You can get right up next to the corn row no matter how tall it is. Just make sure to wear long sleeves once it s chest-high :)

We used to grow an acre of sweet corn, but now I just grow enough for my extended family to freeze. I used to cultivate with an old back-breaker tiller. When I finally got a rear-tine I felt like kicking myself in the butt a thousand times for not doing it earlier. Weeding with a new tiller is downright relaxing.
