It is a shame it went down, but it is better to lose it that way than to just have it rot away in some museum.
That is pretty much how I feel about any old and even rare stuff. Better to use it and take a chance on something happening to it than to store it someplace "nice and safe".
Buildings do burn down or get blown away by storms destroying what is in them. Life holds no guarantees that any or all of what we have will still be here a year, month, week, day, or hour from now.
That plane was "just" an item. Irreplaceable, yes, but not a life.
