I'll second the $50 rubber bed mat. They are about 3/8 inch thick, weight over 50 pounds and are hard to damage.
Gasoline and oil spills will soften the top surface of a mat for a few months. They don't protect the sides of the bed but the bed floor stays looking almost new. The flat top surface makes it easier for me to shovel and push dirt or rocks out the end gate. They are easy to remove or roll up inside the bed to sweep or hose out the bed.
After I sell a truck the old mat makes a good anti-fatique mat in front of a work bench.
