Hello gun guru, Diesel engines are more efficient then a gas engine, but they initially cost more. VW diesels among others have been running around Europe for decades. Fuel has been and still is more expensive then the here in the States. They do(usually) last a lot longer , (the diesels). I don't know why there aren't that many diesel cars here in the States. With the electronics and high fuel pressures of today's diesels, they burn as clean as a gas engine. Guido.
